In the next few years, a network of vertical ports could be created to connect Milan to other Lombard and Swiss cities. Here is the project under study.
During a meeting in Malpensa airport on Wednesday 13 April 2022, the leaders of Sea, the company that manages the city’s airports, and the mayors of Varese and the Canton of Ticino discussed the future of Milan’s air mobility. On the table the possibility of connecting the Milan Malpensa airport to the neighboring cities of Lombardy and Switzerland via electric flights.
Sea President Michaela Castelli: “An important development in connectivity in the near future will be represented by the innovation of Urban Air Mobility“. For this reason, one of the objectives of the institutions and of SEA will be to activate “a network of vertical ports for the use of vertical take-off electric aircraft“.
Mobility based on the use of electric flights, between the Milanese international airport and nearby cities, would be both sustainable and fast. According to the project’s estimates, it would take just 30 minutes to connect Malpensa to Switzerland: “Malpensa could be reached from Locarno and Bellinzona (Switzerland) in just over 30 minutes and from Varese in just 10-15 minutes“. Among the Swiss municipalities concerned are Chiasso, Locarno, Bellinzona, Mendrisio and Lugano. Will the future of fast transport be electric flights?
