The Italian architect Renzo Piano surprised the world again with a building dedicated to cinema, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, in the Wilshire district of Los Angeles. The spherical museum should have been inaugurated in 2020 but the director, Bill Karmer, preferred to move the opening to this autumn to avoid “irresponsible” choices. Hollywood and the entire film industry are celebrated in this 28,000 square meter temple covered by a huge globe of glass from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view.

Known as KaDeWe, Kaufhaus des Westens is Berlin‘s most famous department store. Its renovation project has been entrusted to OMA and a first area of the new centre – the intertwining of escalators – has already been completed in 2021. The entire poject will surprise or disappoint its visitors? We will find it out but certainly the project looks good: 4 areas divided by purchase needs that are joined by a tangle of escalators. In addition will be added a fully glazed roof, to see Berlin from above.

1000 trees planted on the most gigantic building in the M50 district of Shanghai, this is the 1000 Trees project by the Heatherwick studio. The goal is to visually recreate a large mountain covered with vegetation, in fact the trees are strategically positioned at the corners of the building and on interlocking terraces that gradually diminish, creating the effect of a mountain peak.

#5 The Volcano: Datong Art Museum

This futuristic museum built in a Chinese city, Datong, shapes the city’s cultural square and has to resemble a volcanic landscape. The architects, Foster and other partners, have thought of everything: the submerged spaces under a stepped square intersect with the earth-colored peaks that form the upper part of the building. A project that could be defined explosive in the truest sense of the word!
