Little Island, the floating island of New York. Why and where could we design it in Europe?

The FUTURISTIC FLOATING PARK opens in New York. Where could it be done in Europe?

After years of debate between opposites and favors, New York’s futuristic floating park has been inaugurated. In fact, on May 21st Little Island, another green lung and the first suspended island in New York City, was officially opened to New Yorkers and tourists. Definitely an opportunity to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but Little Island is not meant to be just that. Let’s see what benefits it will bring to the Big Apple and why we could also design it in Europe.

Built at Pier 55 – in the Hudson River Park area – the first New York floating island cost $250 million and nearly 10 years of work and debate between for and against. A great investment that will however be maintained for the next 20 years by the tycoon Barry Diller, who will not only take care of the management costs but will ensure that the island becomes a real paradise of relaxation and entertainment, with free appointments or at bargain prices.

In fact, Little Island is home to a large outdoor amphitheater with about 700 seats where shows, concerts, dances and events for children will take place. Barry Diller assured that 51% of the events will be free and the paid activities will be priced under $30. In short, on a green oasis that floats between the most famous districts of New York, you can attend events open to all – citizens and tourists – making the suspended island a new point of attraction. But not only that, you can walk on dedicated pedestrian paths, ride a bicycle, have picnics in specially equipped areas or simply sunbathe surrounded by over 100 species of plants and trees.

# An idea for many European metropolises

This island out of time and metropolitan space – but connected to the mainland with two comfortable walkways – would be exactly what also many European metropolises need, to lose some of their frenzy: between professionalism and leisure, peace and lots of nature with to re-establish a relationship that is definitely in crisis. The American project required a huge investment but the idea of a wealthy private individual who takes care of the costs of management and events is a great idea to be inspired by.

One could think of embellishing some peripheral areas and widening the opportunities for tourists – creating a small paradise not to be missed – but above all for citizens, with any income, who could enjoy a calendar of appointments without worrying about paying the ticket.
