# The “little Petra of Populonia”: an ancient Etruscan necropolis that resembles the city of Jordan carved into the rock
Along the Etruscan itinerary there is what archaeologists have called “the little Petra of Populonia”, due to the similarity with the town of temples and royal tombs of Jordan.
Built over an old sandstone quarry, it is an Etruscan rock necropolis founded between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. and reachable along the Via delle Cave after about 30 minutes of walking through the woods of the Mediterranean scrub.

Popolunia is located within the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia, overlooking the sea of the Gulf of Baratti in Tuscany, in the province of Livorno, and was once the only coastal city among the twelve of the Dodecapolis. Inserted in one of the most important archaeological areas in Italy, in addition to the necropolis there is also an acropolis with huts from the first Etruscan settlements and buildings, mosaics and temples from the Roman phase.
Among the remains to be seen there are also the Building of the Logge, which is a large arched structure on which opens a terrace defined as “monumental”, a thermal structure dating back to the 1st century BC. incredibly intact, a nymphaeum and a large domus.
