A biomorphic office tower, a building with a particular shape, a sort of flattened sphere. This is the new skyscraper that will appear in the homeland of movie stars  Hollywood and the name of the building could not be more apt: The Star. Is it because it touches the sky? Or because the architects who designed it entered the full Hollywood spirit?

At 6061 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, Los Angeles, a new building will appear by 2026. It isn’t so high if compared to the biggest skyscrapers in the United States, but still a 22-storey building in which gardens and tree-lined terraces will be integrated. The Star was designed by the Chinese architecture studio MAD Architects, born in 2004 in Beijing and now also spread in Los Angeles, New York and Rome. The goal of the studio is to make The Star the new landmark of Hollywood: it will host the offices of a major global entertainment company and for this reason architects hope it can become a place of inspiration and creativity.

It will be the first architecture specifically designed for a post-Covid world and this will be noticed in the distribution of spaces. In addition, the goal is to ensure an improvement in physical, emotional and mental well-being of employees through architecture. In addition to the offices, there will be an enclosed rooftop restaurant, an event space and a panoramic observation platform. There will also be hanging gardens and tree-lined terraces, such as the “Garden in the sky” on the 10th and 17th floors, designed by SALT Landscape Architects. The garden is located on the ground floor. And on the top floor there will be a garden designed just to look like a greenhouse, a terrarium.

But what makes the building so special? The Star is enclosed in a gigantic glass dome and marked by an egg-shaped superstructure. The superstructure is crossed by a thin band with a precise function: it is the funicular track built to take guests directly to the top floor in the rooftop restaurant.
