An approach never seen before in urbanization that aims to overcome the challenges of modern cities by giving priority back to people. This is what this revolutionary city should be like.

“The Line” should arise within an area called Neom, a fusion of the prefix neo, from the Greek “new”, with the Arabic word mustaqbal “future”, in the province of Tabuk, in the north-west of Saudi Arabia, near the border with Jordan and on the other side of the Gulf of Aqaba from Egypt.

It will be a “straight city” made up of a series of housing modules repeated along the 170 km of extension, capable of connecting the Red Sea coast and the desert with the mountains and high valleys of the north-west of Saudi Arabia. It should be inhabited by a maximum of one million inhabitants and aims to conserve 95% of the surrounding nature, with zero cars, zero roads and zero carbon emissions.

Each module will be a real autonomous neighborhood, with all the necessities reachable in five minutes on foot. The construction of the city is based on maximum flexibility, with real “giants decumani” crossed by express trains. In this it will be quite easy to expand it, add a new module anywhere on the line, and connect it to the already existing transport system. A scheme that can be used to build small towns or megacities.

In this vision of the city, there will also be a revolution in terms of transport, with a multi-level structure and artificial intelligence as the main theme. The surface level will be walkable and green, self-driving cars and driveways will be positioned on a lower level, while lower still, a high-speed mass transit system similar to the Hyperloop is envisaged to traverse the whole linear city in just 20 minutes.
