# The network reaches 783 km in length

The Beijing subaway has grown exponentially in just 20 years. In 2000, the underground transport network of the Chinese capital was still about 70 kilometers long and only 2 lines were operational.

With the new inaugurations and extensions, this area of 20 million inhabitants is now served by a 783 km long metro, with 459 stops and 27 lines, including 22 rapid transit lines, two railway connections to the airport, a maglev line and 2 light rail lines. It is confirmed by posting as the largest in the world.

December 31st is the traditional day when the newly built subway lines in Beijing open. In 2021, 63.2 km of tracks were added, equal to two thirds of the extension of the network in operation in Milan:

  • three completely new lines: 11 Jin’anqiao – Xinshougang (Shougang Park) of 4.2 km in the area where this year’s Winter Olympics will take place, 17 Shilihe – Jiahuihu of 16.5 km and line 19 Mudanyuan – Xingong of 22.4 km;
  • six extensions of existing lines: line 8 National Art Museum – Zhushikou of 5.5 km, line 14 Xiju – Beijing South Railway Station of 6.7 km, line 16 Ganjiakou – Yuyuantan Park East Gate of 1.1 km, line S1 Jin ‘anqiao – Pingguoyuan of 0.8 km, Changping Xi’erqi – Qinghe Railway Station line of 1.5 km and Line 34 Capital Airport Express Dongzhimen – Beixinqiao, 4.5 km.
