Mergozzo: the CLEANEST LAKE in EUROPE
This is Mergozzo Lake, defined by some as Italy’s Bajkal lake, since in spite of its small size, two kilometers long per one wide, lake is over 75 meters of depth, for a total volume of 90 million cubic meters of water.
As the crow flies, it’s a couple of km from the larger and more famous Maggiore Lake, to which it is connected by an artificial canal, and about ten from Lake of Orta.
The water of this lake were found to be the cleanest in Europe thanks to the absence of industry on the shores, the prohibition of motorboats and a sewage system that diverts waste elsewhere. For this reason there is no element that can pollute water of the lake, that is as well as source. Precisely for this reason it is a tourist destination especially from Germany where the lake is more famous than in Italy. Water sports such as canoeing, kayaking, wind surfing and sport fishing are practiced.
Mergozzo boasts other records: in its territory there is also a century-old elm, the most famous monumental tree in Piedmont, and it has even given its name to the wind, Mergozzo’s.
