In the Cannareggio district in Venice, shopping can be a truly unique experience. In fact, here is the Despar supermarket built inside the former Cinema Teatro Italia and defined as “the most beautiful in Italy“.

A neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau jewel of the early 1900s, once used as a theater, cinema and university and in disuse for decades, it has been transformed into a grocery store. The investment of about five million euros was divided between Aspiag Service, the Despar concessionaire for the Northeast and the owner of the historic building.

The entire internal and external structure has been restored and maintained as it was originally. In the center of the ceiling of the main hall you can admire in its splendor the fresco of an allegory entitled the Glory of Italy by the Venetian painter Alessandro Pomi, as well as the other liberty decorations by Guido Marussig from Friuli and other local artists. On the outside, the single and triple lancet windows that reflect the lagoon gothic style stand out, the coats of arms on the first floor and the marching lion on the balustrade and finally the wrought iron entrance portals.

The restoration of the property was carried out in close collaboration and under the supervision of the Superintendency, as well as the setting up of the supermarket favored the need to preserve the integrity of the rooms and decorations. Specifically, full LED lighting was installed directly on the shelves, so as not to damage the structure of the building and the frescoes. The shelves themselves were made of a lower height than the standard to allow visual access to the beauty of the room and in wood to integrate with the style of the building. All measures have also been taken to reduce odors and emissions and to limit the dispersion of temperature and humidity.
